The Mander Centre is a 1960s-era, 52,500 m² retail destination with a catchment of more than 584,000 residents and 17 million annual visitors. It needed revitalizing to attract a different shopper demographic and encourage longer visits.

The work formed part of a wider £35 million investment program that included a new flagship anchor store and ten additional retail units — so the environment had to change at the same pace the tenant mix did.

GLIMMA focused design interventions on the center’s main entrances, using new signage and vibrant lighting to improve visibility day and night, and working closely with the center’s architects and individual retailers to align on one concept.

Repositioned a 52,500 m² Wolverhampton shopping center as part of a £35 million investment program, using signage, lighting and wayfinding to reshape the visitor experience.

The challenge

A 1960s center, and a different shopper

The Mander Centre, a 1960s-era, 52,500 m² retail destination with a catchment of more than 584,000 residents and 17 million annual visitors, needed revitalizing to attract a different shopper demographic and encourage longer visits.

The work formed part of a wider £35 million investment program, including a new flagship anchor store and 10 additional retail units. The physical environment needed to support that repositioning, not simply accommodate the new tenants.

That meant rethinking how the center presented itself from the street, how visitors entered and moved through the building, and how the new experience connected with the wider retail offer. The challenge was to align these changes across architects, retailers and other stakeholders while keeping the center operational.

The approach

Start at the entrances.

GLIMMA focused design interventions on the center’s main entrances, using new signage and vibrant lighting schemes to improve visibility day and night.

The team worked closely with the center’s architects and individual retailers to align on a design concept that every stakeholder could commit to before anything was built.

The entrances set the tone for the experience. From there, consistent signage and wayfinding carry that experience through the center.

The solution

New entrances, new lighting,
a new way through.

The Mander Centre entrance facade in daylight, its name lit above the canopy against a blue sky.

GLIMMA delivered new signage and lighting schemes at the center’s main entrances, contemporary interior wayfinding signage throughout, and strategic signage placement near the newly installed lifts and escalators to guide the customer journey. The interventions were designed to work together: visibility from the street, legibility once inside, and a route that leads visitors past the center’s expanded food and entertainment offering.

07

Implementation

Design carried through to installation across the center.

Entrances first: new signage and lighting change whether the center reads as open and current from the street.

Inside, wayfinding placed around the new lifts and escalators steers the journey toward the expanded food and entertainment offering.

“The design team at GLIMMA immediately understood the brief and ran with it, producing design concepts that hit the mark with all stakeholders, from architects to individual retailers.”

The impact

A changed appearance,
and changed behavior.

The environmental enhancements transformed the center’s appearance and changed shopper behavior, encouraging visitors to stay longer and engage with the expanded food and entertainment offerings.

Because the concept was agreed with architects and retailers before it was built, the interventions landed as one coherent scheme rather than a set of separate upgrades.

The result supports the wider £35 million investment: a center that reads as current from the street, and reads clearly once a visitor is inside it.

Why us?

Signage alone doesn’t change a center

A 1960s shopping center doesn’t get a new audience from signage alone — it needs an entrance experience and a wayfinding journey that changes how people actually move through the space.

GLIMMA’s focus on entrances, lighting and journey-led wayfinding gave stakeholders — from architects to individual retailers — a concept everyone could align behind.

GLIMMA continues to support the Mander Centre as its environment strategy evolves.

Environment design. Entrances, lighting and wayfinding designed as one scheme, not three purchases.

Environment transformation

Retail environments. A 52,500 m² destination repositioned for a different shopper and a longer visit.

Retail and customer experiences

Stakeholder alignment. Architects and individual retailers brought behind one concept before build.
